Hometown Far Away
9-year-old Min Min says, “A perfect Spring Festival should have snow and family reunion.”
Min Min is a beautiful and bright girl. As her hometown is in Liaoning Province, Northeast China, she can speak fluent Northeast dialect. So far she has lived in Nanning for 8 years. She says, “My mom told me that I moved to Nanning when I was 1 year old. Since then, I almost spent all my Spring Festival here.” Now her grandparents, aunty and cousin have all moved to Nanning.

She says, “I like spending Spring Festival in hometown the best.” But actually she doesn’t have clear memory about hometown and hometown’s Spring Festival. Hearing mom describing hometown’s Spring Festival for times, she always feels like that is her own memory. She says. “I return to hometown for Spring Festival once, may be when I was 3 years old. I was too young to remember well. Mom told me that I had a good time when I played with other kids in hometown.”
Speaking of Spring Festival, Min Min mentioned snow for several times. There is a saying on internet: the reaction of people from south when they first see snow is more fun than snow itself. Though born in Northeast China, Min Min has the same eagerness for snow as south people.
One of the important reasons why she likes Spring Festival is that she can get lucky money. Though last Spring Festival she got the least lucky money than previous years, it is by far the happiest Spring Festival for her. She says, “It snowed here in Nanning last Spring Festival. I was so happy to play with snow.” She finally saw the “snow” that her mother mentioned a lot, which made her very excited.
Min Min expects to spend Spring Festival in hometown this year, but her mother said the railway ticket is too expensive, so they will still stay in Nanning. Despite a little disappointed, she thinks it is also great that the whole family could spend the festival together. She says, “Spring Festival in hometown may be more exciting, but that in Nanning is also good. I like it too.”
Every Spring Festival, the urban village in which Min Min live in becomes quite. Most migrant workers will return to their hometown to celebrate Spring Festival. However, this will not affect Min Min’s family. Though they have stayed in Nanning for many years, they still keep the traditional Spring Festival customs of north area. She says, “In Spring Festival, my mom and my grandmother will get up early to make spring pancake. Besides, we will eat dried bean curd with green Chinese onion and soybean sauce.”
The children’s center subsidized by World Vision is not too far from Min Min’s home. Every day after school, she will come to the children’s center to do homework and read books. She says, “This term I have participated in story-telling activity, living skills class and little science experiment. I have learnt a lot of new knowledge from the activities. For example, from the living skills class, I have learnt how to handle emotions and what to do once I get angry. If I have the chance to return hometown, I want to share the knowledge to my friends in hometown. ”
Min Min said, “A perfect Spring Festival should have the companion of parents and families.”
